Paint will go a long way to solve the problem. I would paint the ceiling in a white, and paint the walls in a light grey. Then paint the baseboards in a white trim paint, as well as the molding around the doors. If they are not already panelled doors, I would add some decorative molding to them, and paint them white as well. I can't tell from the photo what material the flooring is, but I would either bring in a runner rug in lighter colors or replace the flooring with vinyl planks or tiles. IMHO. Best wishes.
This should give you a lot of ideas. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/255579347584370704/?lp=true The website at the top has some ideas to really brighten up a hallway. Maybe you could find different ideas at the different sites. Good luck.
I agree with Kal! Her idea sounds terrific, and some of pictures in these sites will show what she is talking about:

What type of lighting do you presently have in the hallway? As it looks very yellowish and shadowy, my guess is that it is incandescent.
My suggestion to make the space look larger, brighter, and updated, is to switch out the present fixture with a new LED integrated fixture. LED light is clear, crisp, and white. Install a dimmer switch on the wall control so that you can vary the light according to time of day, seasons and activity levels.
When you purchase the paint, make certain to use the bright white base. It really makes a difference. Daylight bulbs (such as Reveal) really make an area more inviting. If the attic is large enough, you might want to install additional light fixtures along the ceiling. Using different fixtures can add some quirkiness to the area if so desired. Rope lights on both sides of the ceiling would also make a statement. Happy deciding!
My biggest recommend is paint, the lighter the color the brighter it will feel. Also check out what wattage your light bulb is, you can maybe put a brighter LED light in that fixture or consider replacing that fixture with a brighter one.
