Preserve a real pumpkin?
Is it possible to clean out a real pumpkin and coat it with a thin layer of something to preserve it? If so what suggestions do others have for doing this?

Hi Sandra,
If you're attempting to keep a decorative pumpkin longer there is a bleach method that helps keep the pumpkin moister and an alcohol method that helps it dry out. If you want to use the pumpkin for food, the best method is to cut it up, cook it, mash it and freeze it. Here's an article that I found that shows those 3 methods.

No
I don't suggest this at all..... I tried the exact method you described and my house was crawling with little bugs and fruit flies. ABSOLUTELY NOT WORTH IT! I spent way more money getting rid of the little critters than it would have cost to buy more pumpkins.
Sandra, It's a lot of work and it's not very successful. I would say, after it has served it's purpose, throw it away and get another one. Maybe an artificial one. If you do not carve or cut into a real pumpkin it will last a lot longer, just decorate the outside of it.
I've read to cover them in petroleum jelly, but personally, I prefer the fake pumpkins. They're inexpensive and fun to decorate.
Hi Sandra - When you decide it's time for the pumpkins to go, this is the puree method that I recommend. Happy Halloween! Hugs, Holly
