Sand it, prime it, paint it. You decide what finish you want.... satin, semi-gloss or gloss.

You can also paint it with chalk paint which doesn't require any sanding. Good luck!
If it's pine or mahogany, (red or yellow wood), it needs to be sealed with shellac first. The oils in the wood will bleed and discolor your white paint. Shellac is easy to use and dries quickly. Use a cheap chip brush with it.
