I would use Dixie Belle Slick stick on it first. THEN paint. The slick stick will make sure that the paint will adhere to the newer pottery barn surface.

I always sand it with a fine citation sandpaper ( 180 or 220 grit) then spray a light coat of primer & paint it with a water based semi gloss or gloss paint (i happen to like glossy paints best). I've never had a problem with the paint not sticking or having to use anything else "special" to make it come out right.......& I do a LOT of furniture refinishing. Good luck!
Grr typo.......fine grit
Remove hardware. Scuff with fine steel wool so the paint will adhere. Clean with denatured alcohol. Prime then paint.
I purchased my melamine desk at Salvation Army-----it was PURPLE! Ugly purple that not go with anything...
I found a spray Plastic paint at home depot.....cleaned the desk thoroughly and then simply sprayed the whole thing white....been two years an has not peeled or chipped. It gts a lot of wear since my 2 sergers sit on it and I do sew a lot! Good luck
