Be sure to make the rise equal at each step. The run has standard depths that are fairly universal. However, if you have big clown feet, you may want to make the treads wider.

I can tell you what my husband did. He went to home improvement store and took a 2 x 12 over to some ready made risers and traced them onto his 2 x 12, took it home, cut it out and put 2 x 6's or 2 x 8's on the steps (depends on how wide they are). Then he used 4 x4 's for the corners and attached them to the toprisers to secure it. He put on a 2 x4 for a rail and connected it on one side to the steps and 4 x 4's . It was that easy.
