How do I build device for laundry basket to move up & down stairs?

Please, I need ideas for builds that do the carrying/pulling of a laundry bag/basket up & down stairs. A crank pulley system will not work since that still requires a certain amount of strength.

Or anyone know how to build a motorized version of the pulley system ?

My mom is 66 years young & is having surgery on her right shoulder next month, April 6, 2022. She has also recently recovered from back surgery. This why I am looking for something that doesn’t involve manual exertion on her part.

Thanks in advance! 🙏🏽

  • Rather than having to install a pulley system, the laundry could be put in a bag and rolled down the stairs. To get it back up, make a few trips with light loads.

I just thought of perhaps a motorized clothes rack. Not sure if that will work but I'm thinking similar to what a dry cleaner's has.

As a caregiver, it sounds like its time for Mom to move to a ground level unit with her existing medical conditions. If not, can you rig a pulley system into a window, anchoring the pulley into the roof overhang in front of one of her windows. That could be motorized.

Does your mom live alone? How many floors does her house have? Will she have a care giver or someone to help her around her home while she recovers? Have you contacted your GP regarding in home help?

My only idea is to build a slide on one side of the stairs. You can add a crank winch at the top of the stairs waist height to pull the laundry basket up. the basket can be slid down without using the winch. Crank winches can be bought at Menards, Home Depot. A crank winch doesn't take a lot of strength since there is a gear ratio to make it easy. You just need to configure things for your mothers' comfort.

Will this laundry lifting device be a permanent structure in the home, or just temporary while your mom recovers? If it is planned to be only temporary, it may be more cost effective to hire someone to help with laundry tasks instead of building or purchasing an automatic device.

Why don’t you ring the machine up stairs

Multiple pulleys rigged from ceiling to handrail area will make any physical effort much easier. the more pulleys the lighter the load!

Wishing your mom a speedy recovery and all goes as planned.

She should be able to concentrate on the healing process rather than be concerned about the laundry and all the rest of the chores that come with a house. Her health is the main focus. Your mom will be doing PT eventually to help her shoulder heal as it should. She needs help. If she is holding or pulling with her good arm, that leaves the other arm vulnerable. Depending on where your mom lives, there is help available through agencies, social workers, nursing, all is about the level of aide she needs. Contact her Dr and see what resources are available post-op.

Here is a motorized grocery hauler.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wMj75a4LzA And if you look at a couple down below, they use the same hoister to make a dumb waiter. Bunch of ideas there.

You may want to think about installing a chair lift. The chair lift is something she can use in the future and for now can help her carry the laundry upstairs.

If laundry shoot is already in place a pulley system with some sort of basket would work.
