I am in Zone 9 and do not have any cool dark places. I pull mine up when I want them or only buy what can be used up within a week to 10 days. Any longer and they start to sprout. And since I waste nothing in my house, I plop out in the ground or in my sweet potato pot and call it a day.
Store them in a dry, cool, dark place. Check frequently and pick off any sprouts. If you keep the sprouts from growing too long they last longer.
