How can I stop algae from growing in a backyard fountain?
The fountain is a small one that sits in the shade and cats, raccoons and other wildlife drink from it so chlorine is not an option.

I use white vinegar and hot water to clean mine it will get the algae out and is safe for the critters, just be sure you rinse it well..

I use pieces of copper pipe in mine. While it doesn’t completely stop it it slows it down.
My daughter has an outdoor fountain and she wanted to get the algae out and keep it from coming back. The fountain empties into a small pond and recycles the water, plus she keep some exotic fish in the pond. She was told to put a semi-transparent tarp above it and that took care of the problem. The sun causes the algae to grow.
I keep an old scrub brush in the garage and scrub my bird bath and fountain about once a week. Running the water frequently should prevent algae build up, too,
