No Lawn!
It depends upon your growing zone and the look you want. I have no grass, but I do have moss instead for a woodland look. In the southwest, for example, people decorate with desert landscaping, gravel and cactus.
Depending on where you live, use products common to that area.
For example, in the desert areas, rocks/mulch and boulders with a few plants works well.
In wetter areas, straw or mulch beds work well. Here is a photo of my yard as we are reshaping it since we lost all of our trees out front! We had large straw beds for leaves, etc., but are now going low maintenance. We don't want any more grass.
One thing I am seeing lately on REHAB programs is laying out a sitting area over to the side for sitting areas, some with laid stones and some with artificial turf!
Add some character not just laying everything out square...use some irregular lines. (Keep in mind that this is our first year of reworking the yard...not nearly finished!)
We are putting in a Yucca/Spike garden that we still have lots of work on. But we will get there!
Use rock or bark if you can? Great choices of color for both. Hope this helps you?
Check out what I did here - raised beds and gravel and I love it.
