Is chalk paint used mainly for distressing furniture?
I just finished a bookcase redo using chalk paint for the first time and coating it with Gator Hide from Dixie Bell. I've accidentally brushed against it (after every coat had dried for 24 hours each), why does it seem to scrape off? Can I repaint over with latex paint without sanding first?

Chalk paint takes at least 30 days to cure. It will feel dry but can scratch until the paint has reached it's full hardness and cured. Chalk paint is a good product for distressing--but you can use it to paint a solid coat without distressing. If you have finished your project with Gator Hide--that is a poly product. If you try to paint over the Gator Hide with no sanding and priming--your latex paint will scratch off. I would suggest using a fine sand paper to knock down the shine from the Gator Hide and give a primer some grip. I would give that project a few days of drying time before use.
Did you wash your bookcase with vinegar or windex before using the chalk paint? Sometimes the surface still needs a light sand depending on the finish, ex: smooth surface like melamine needs sanding before chalk paint or it will scrape off easily., and definitely needs too be clean. If you want to repaint the book case with latex you will probably need to sand and possibly scrape depending on how much it’s rubbing off. I would use a high adhesive primer after I’ve sanded and scraped the old chalk paint, before I used the latex paint. Hope that helped
Hi KD! I am sure that was very disappointing to you having just finished your project. Take a look at these sites and hopefully they will give you the information you are seeking. Best to you!

I always use Rustoleum s chalk paint and their top coat (which is a brush on clear, very durable). I don't know what Gator Hide is, a wax? May have to strip the wax off first?
I had purchased the Dixie Bell sometime ago after reading a hometalker using and discussing it. The Gator Hide is some kind of water repellent. That too was what she used. Didn't know it wouldn't put a little shine to it.
Thank you for the response and links.
KD---I don't think you will need to wait 30 days-cure time--to put your books back on the shelves--but I would wait a few days! Hope it all works out for you!
