How to renovate our house?

Hi all,My wife and I bought new home. The home is actually old. We are thinking of renovating it. We are thinking of doing something not to loud. something that will fit the old look of the house. The first thing would be the kitchen, just the windows and bringing in a few new appliances. Also changing the beds and the bed frames in the bedroom. Another major renovation we are thinking of is the stair rails. They are of wood, which has started to fade the color and the texture. Also, there is whitish power falling from the stairs. So, we were thinking of changing the railings to metal. We are planning for a forged steel bars for the same. What do you people think? Also, it would be appreciated if you could suggest me some indoor decor ideas, that we can try for our new home. As said before something that wouldn't take off the glam of that old house. Awaiting your valuable suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Pictures would be a big help. I'd want to find out what the white powder is. If it's plaster or wood dust. Changing the railing maybe the last change for the stairs.

There are so many things you want addressed. Why don't you enlist the help of an interior designer for ideas and suggestions? Look for one who knows historic houses and is not just a furniture store decorator. Let them know you are only interested in consultation and that you would like to do a lot of the work yourself. A good designer should be able to do a walk thru consult for no more than 2 hours. A good designer will save you far more money than their hourly fee. I would interview and get referrals.

The white powder could be paint dust. The iron railings are a more modern look in the horizontal position but vertical they can be more elaborate giving an older feel. The country style with the dark table tops and white/ivory legs adds a homey touch plus some rustic chicken wire or restyled objects can add interest to a home. The age of the home wold give us some idea of what would look best. It will be wonderful to see the finished results. Good luck on whatever you choose to do.

It will depend on the style of the house. Farmhouse, Victorian, Craftsman, etc. as to whether or not changing the rails would work with or against the original style.

I would first find the source of the dust and put a stop to that. If the rails are original, I would try to save them by refinishing with a durable topcoat.

  • Congratulations! What is the style of your house? Do you want to keep the vintage feel of the home with updated style and convenience? Before doing anything, live in the house a bit. Once you get a feel of things, your ideas will change. Time to start googling and poking around on Pinterest and any other social media sites. Flip through design magazines in the library. When you are out and about, snap photos of things that catch your eye, architectural details, flooring, appliances, furniture arrangements - anything. Then see where and how they could be applied to your new home. Windows are an investment - do your research well. Or enlist the services of an interior designer. No matter what you do, enjoy your new home and the renovation process.

Here’s a visual on a couple of staircase ideas.the one on the right, you can paint, and beef up the posts. Looks like it be a little less expensive since you’d only be using 3-4 railings.

Hi Dennis. My name is Cindy. I recommend that you take a walk thru a salvage business. You might be surprised and find rails there more in the time period of your new home. I also recommend that you make a binder for things you like. Furniture, patterns, fabrics, furniture layouts, and ideas to start. Take it with you when you go out. You will find inspiration everywhere. Write down ideas and include them too. Take pictures too. By taking pictures, you may be able to replicate things instead of paying pricey retail amounts. Sometimes pictures are just as good as the patterns to make items. I hope this helps you. Good luck from Cindy.
