The easiest way to paint and paper inside a hutch is to remove the back , if possible.
I always remove all doors, also. To me, nothing looks worse than paint on hinges.
Clean it well and paint it if necessary (a dark back can show through small cracks with light colored wallpaper.
Each wallpaper has it's own instructions for application. Measure the height and cut with a little extra room to spare. Apply as instructions dictate and use a squeegee to smooth it. Use a sponge to remove excess glue if applicable. Here's a post I wrote on how to install wallpaper in a bookshelf. The concept is similar.
Hi Katherine. I used a wallpaper backing for my China hutch. I used photo adhesive around the back side of the paper, only around the edges, after cutting it to size. I change my decor constantly, and it is easy to remove and switch each time. Only one shelf is removable, so I had to cut three separate pieces. I have also used contact paper, but found it leaves a sticky residue when removed.
I used cotton fabric and mod podge. I agree with taking the back off. If this isn't an option, take the doors and hinges off, take out any shelves and lay the hutch on its back. Then measure and cut your wallpaper. Remember - measure twice, cut once. You could even make a pattern using cardboard or paper. This will help ensure the wallpaper fits properly.
