Pick the space you want, put down weed barrier then dirt. Get some succulents to plant and finally put tan bark or decorative bark of some kind to top it all off.
Should be very pretty. I personally don't like rocks or gravel. That's why I suggested tan bark. Good luck.

Look into Xeriscaping. Can be done in any part of the country using easy care low maintenance (and low water) native plantings. Extremely popular where I live. Here are some ideas to get you started.
