Hi Bobbie! This tutorial should help you:

I have heard of cracking open pumpkin seeds or cutting/carving a pumpkin but never cracking a pumpkin open. I guess if you want to crack it open drop it from the top of a ladder onto concrete.
Sugar (pie) pumpkins need a bit of strength to get into. Here are some great sites:

Here is a story for you. After my dad had passed and my brother and I no longer lived close by, my mom had to fend for herself sometimes. One time she got it into her head to make pumpkin puree for various recipes. No one was around to help out, (everyone works, no neighbors were home either), she stabbed them with an ice pick (so they would not explode) and placed on the gas grill and in the oven to (roast), soften them enough for her to slice into. It worked. From that point on, I made sure to open jars or halve tough to get into fruits or vegetables (You should have seen what she did to a watermelon one time.) Hilarious . . .
Bobbie just throw the whole pumpkin straight in the oven.
After about 45 minutes, the pumpkins will be soft enough to cut open easily. (Just beware of escaping steam.)
