Do not pour water on the ice. It will make it worse.
Start the car and turn on the heater on a high temperature. Close all doors and windows for a few minutes. The layer of ice in contact with the windows will start to melt first, then it will be easier for you to scrape the remaining ice with one of these. https://www.amazon.com/Mallory-S24-994-Maxx-Scraper-Foam/dp/B000BQK526/ref=sr_1_5?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1543451504&sr=1-5&keywords=ice+scraper+under+%246
Epsom salt or regular table salt
The ice scraper is the quickest way
Keep a bottle of vinegar and rubbing alcohol in your car. You want this to be the same temperature as the outside. Spray it on the windshield and it will melt the ice without residue. Using any salts is hard on the vehicle paint.
I would heat up your car first and put the window defroster on. I’d then use a car window ice scraper.
Hi, Jane,
You can purchase an ice dissolving spray for auto glass at most auto supply places (Pep Boys, Auto Zone, NAPA, etc.). Spray on iced windshields and you should see immediate results. Faster than waiting for car to defrost windows, and wasting gasoline.
If you're in a snow and ice zone, keep a windshield cover in your car. It's held in place by your windshield wipers and your car doors. They're very thin, easily foldable/storeable, and easily "installed" by one person. Once in place on the windshield, tuck the flaps inside the car. Close one door against flap. Enter car from other side. Pull second flap taut and adhere to window with attched suction cups, then close door. If no suction cups, merely close doors against flaps.
