This may help. https://homeguides.sfgate.com/quickest-way-remove-varnish-stain-sanding-45220.html
If you like the stain and you just want to remove the smell of the stain, place charcoal briquettes in a bowl or container and place near and around the area. The charcoal will help absorb the odor. DO NOT use the type of briquettes to which a fire starter has been added. Just plain old-fashioned charcoal bbq briquettes!
You can prime and paint it. Lightly sand to remove any gloss. Prime with Kilz primer then paint.
You can sand and restain it. Sand down to raw wood. Stain and seal with three coats of a water based polyurethane.
You can also use gel stain directly over the existing stain without any prep. You can go darker but not lighter.

Sealing it with polycrylic will also take care of the smell.
Yes, I agree with others that you may need to re seal it with polyurethane maybe chalk paint and wax sealer...my sister spent a lot of money on a new vanity and she had the same issue, it stinks !!! She tried using lemon oil on it , set out dishes of baking soda ...it's 5 years later and it still smells bad , not as bad as when she first got it , but you can smell it as soon as you walk into the room 😣 good luck !
