Fake out with a mirror and extended window frame. Mirror inside new frame . Add curtains to the new width and length of new window.
I would hang a curtain rod high above the small window and use over sized curtains that when closed will make the window look larger.
I agree with Homeroad, make the window look larger by going up above the window and wider and longer than the window size you have now. Don't open the drapes all the way when you open them, just enough to not show the window frame on the sides.
Hang a blind that starts well above the window frame and extends to well below the sill. Then hang curtains on either side that overlap the window frame just a bit. You can even place a light behind the blind to look like sunlight.
