Here's my tips: Make sure you use the bondo spatula because it makes the job a million times easier. Spread it on as thin as possible to cover the damage so that you're not sanding too much. Once it's dry, start sanding with 80 grit paper and work your way to 220 until it's smooth. The smell goes away once you seal it with primer. Prime before you paint or it will look patchy where the paint absorbed differently.
