They have gotten wet and or deteriorating. Sorry, but their life is over.
You could try sanding them and then resurfacing with a thin coat of Bondo. Bondo is used to repair dents and hole in automobiles it is a two part epoxy it sands beautifully and it isn't too expensive. Particle board is wood dust and glue. When the wood gets wet it expands and cracks the glue. It is unlikely to sand smooth so do the best you can and then resurface them to get a smoother finish. Large areas of Bondo can be a liitle stinky when you apply it, so you want to work in a well ventilated area. If you go this way, be sure to prime and paint them with high quality products.
Cut pieces of luan (1/4th inch thick plywood) the size of the door, then glue and use small nails to attach. They can be painted or stained.
I had two doors that were really bad on the bottom. I first cut off the worst part with my exacto knife, then I painted with lots of wood glue. After the glue was dry I painted it with brown as close to the color that I had. Looks a lot better then it did and hasn't gotten any worse. The Bondo step, or just wood filler would probably be even better, but I didn't think of that at the time. Good luck
Hi Kelli,
I would use wood filler. when dry rub down and re-paint to match.
