i don't have a high ceiling, i sometimes tie fishing line to the wall to keep it from tipping over , but i wondered if there was something that would deter the cat from going near the tree.
I don't think you can.
Train him or her. Sounds crazy, but it works. Just tell them NO sharply until they understand. If you have the capability, keep the kitty out of the room when you can't be within earshot to supervise.
Here are some things you can try.

I acquired 6 rescue kitties about 3 years ago. The first year was certainly trying, but they learned and now I have no worries. The like to nap under the tree.
Hello Jeanne,
You can't, unless you ban him from the room they are attracted to sparkly things and things that move or flicker.
You can train them but while your cat is in training be realistic the first couple of years.
Tie off the tree so it won't tip over and use non-breakable ornaments. It allows you to concentrate on training.....while removing your "cat-turned-velcro" from the middle of the tree you don't need to worry about pulling the tree down on top of you.
To be honest, I suspect my kittie just lost interest by the second year, it wasn't about my superior training abilities.
Hi Jeanne,
Don't let him in the room un attended!
