Unless you're in a very cold locale, they should survive with 4" mulch (but not up against main stem). If you're concerned about excessive cold, ice, or salt damage, you can insert stakes on outside perimeter and secure multiple layers of burlap to the stakes, using twist ties. Roses are typically trimmed in late winter (late Feb.) in zone 6.
Hi Kathy,
Here's a good article on caring for roses in the winter: https://www.jacksonandperkins.com/winter-care-of-roses/a/516/
Kathy, Roses are like Children. The more you baby them the weaker they get. So, you never baby roses. Care for them in the Spring, Prune them evenly as the Blooms Remove to a Vase, and let them Grow Strong and Hearty in the Winter.
