Hit up any craft store for buttons! I've also found jars of old buttons and yard sales!
Michaels crafts
Try rummage sales. Usually at churches once or twice a year. Collections are sometimes brought in for sale.
Estate sales should have "button boxes". I have found some that way. Also rummage sales where you can find real cheap or free clothes that have wonderful buttons. My mother tied sets of buttons with sturdy thread. Works well but I love searching the a stash of buttons for the really special ones.
The others made some great suggestions, but if you want a particular kind of button, try Hobby Lobby or Joann's Fabrics.
When something is being tossed I cut the buttons off. Sometimes clothes come with extra buttons I save those to. Buttons can be found where fabric is sold.
Ebay
All over! Haberdashers, craft stores, older relatives eBay Amazon, old clothes, 2nd hand and charity shops!
