Where I live, the plastic is not recyclable and having a *real* milk crate is considered being in possession of stolen property. Plain old stacking crates from a dollar store are very different and not nearly as durable. I remember when milk crates were metal and one of the best shoe racks around. You could use it as a shelf and hang your heels from the sides... and get arrested for being organized. That puts a whole new meaning to organization police huh? :D
As for milk cartons... I've seen quite a few cool ideas here for how to use them. I've taken 25 of them (all the same size) and glued them together to make a 5x5 'box' for sorting small items. I've also used them to make drawer dividers for my granddaughter's sock and underwear drawer where she also keeps gloves scarves and slips.
I also used one to make inserts for a stuffed animal's ears to keep them erect... but I don't think that's the kind of solution you're looking for.
You just gotta think about it.
