You need to leave air room around the microwave for it to function as it should. Next time you use your microwave, feel around and you will see that a lot of air comes out from the unit, so it will need lots of circulation for fresh air and to get rid of what comes out. If you want to fill in the spaces, see if there is a trim that will fill in the open space around the from. There are a lot of different sizes and styles you can choose from. Perhaps a type of crown molding on top if needed and narrower around the sides.

  • Where are you enclosing it? What is the cabinetry in the kitchen? A photo would help. You can make your own trim from moldings from any big box home improvement center. What are they charging for the trim kit?
