Your best course of action would be to very carefully use Round Up for Brush & Poison Ivy. This blend is designed to penetrate the woody stem. This is a non-selective herbicide and it will kill any part of your grass that it comes into contact with.
Would this kill the tree? I would have it removed if I had the space to do it. However I live in a patio home with a very small lawn area. I would have to have fences removed. I did not plant this tree I would never recommend one on a small property.
