Replace with fire proof brick. You might want to hire a mason to make sure it is done properly. We had a home where it wasn't done correctly and embers got in the mortar cracks. What a mess!

what do you mean gone? falling apart ? it may have water/structural damage & needs professionally repaired

  • This is not typically a homeowner DIY. You need a licensed professional. Building and fire codes need to be met. Here is how to hire a contractor.

Start with a safety inspection. Contact your county building department, fire department or find a certified chimney sweep. They should be able to point you towards a proper inspector.

The inspector will check the firebox and the flue. They may also know some qualified repair services.

You can't assume the flue is in any better condition than the firebox so be prepaired for an expensive rebuild.

Inserts are an affordable solution. (Assuming your fireplace isn't actually crumbling), an insert is a safe alternative since it is an insulated barrier sleeve that shields the compromised masonry from firebox to chimney cap. It is also air tight so it protects you from carbon monoxide.

What insides? Is this for a regular wood burning fireplace, electric, gas? Need some more information for suggestions to come your way.
