You really need to vent the fireplace. That would help a lot and be less dangerous. They are not supposed to make mantel hot. Never heard of a heat resistant sheet or how it would work. Please have yiur fireplace checked out.
Hi. A gas fireplace does have to be vented.
Youndont want carbon monoxide poisening.

There are vent free gas fireplaces, but I don't think it should be getting hot. We have a vented gas fireplace with a slab of travertine on it for a mantle (the fireplace sticks out into the room) and it doesn't even get warm. You may want to have your fireplace checked.
