How to get a handle on weeds before they grow in spring?
So many weeds of all kinds, a large yard, I am 71 with health issues. Is there any way to kill weeds before they get green in spring? With most weed killers you need the heat of sunshine to work; I also would prefer a way that won" harm my dog as he is always in the yard with me. Something to kill fast, easy with a large area-many large areas actually, and not too difficult to apply. Thank You!! Barb in upstate New York

There are many pre-emergent products out there. Read the labels carefully.

The only way I know is preemergent weed killer. Not safe for dogs at all. Once they appear. You can spray the yard with this mixure:https://www.hgtv.com/outdoors/gardens/planting-and-maintenance/make-your-own-natural-weed-killer
You could try Preen Weed Preventer. It's granules you sprinkle on your garden, then water in. It claims not to be harmful to dogs, but you should let the garden dry before he walks in it. For large lawns, there's products like crab grass preventer you put down with a spreader, Scott's is one manufacturer.
Systemic Non-Toxic Weed Killer - What you need: One gallon of Cleaning White Vinegar (6 percent acidic), 1/4 cup of Dawn Detergent, two cups of Epsom Salts and a bottle sprayer. Heat the vinegar up to the boiling point and take off burner. Add the Epsom salts and stir till deleted. Set aside and allow to cool. Then add the Dawn detergent and gently stir and pour in to bottle. NOTE: The Cleaning White Vinegar (six percent) is usually found under the regular vinegar. Got mine at Walmart. Do not use this inside your house. That said, This mixture will kill anything it touches. Spray your area. Wait about two weeks and spray again if needed. Remember this is a systemic weed killer and it takes awhile for it to get down to the roots. Will kill poison oak/ivy as well.
Hi Barb - This is the most effective all-natural weed killer DIY that we use. It's even been featured on Hometalk! Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly
