Talk to your carpet store. There should be a moisture barrier carpet pad.. if your basement gets wet, nothing will work until you fix that problem
Moisture barrier doesn’t make sense on concrete. Moisture comes through the ground, and it’s going to whether or not you have a barrier in place. In fact, the moisture barrier could make things worse, much worse. The barrier will do its job to repel the moisture, but now the moisture is trapped between the concrete floor and the pad. The stale water acts like a petri dish for mold. Carpet padding is all you need.
Different types of padding depending on the application.

Use Stego Wrap's 15 mil vapor barrier. It comes in a 7 foot roll that unfolds to 14 feet wide by 140 feet long. It's quite easy to install and Stego has a special tape to seal all the seams and around protrusions to create a true barrier. In the past, 6 mil poly as a vapor barrier under concrete floors and slabs can work in a pinch but it is easily punctured, the Stego Wrap is much more puncture resistant.
There are other manufactures like W.R. Meadows that make equivalent vapor barriers to Stego Wrap. W.R. Meadows vapor barrier is called Perminator, it also comes in 10 mil and 15 mil thicknesses. Those are what many contractors use.
SPLIT LEVEL HOME, USING IN DOWNSTAIRS WRECK ROOM AREA. HAD CARPETING MANY YEARS AGO. NOW WOULD LIKE TO PUT CARPET DOWN AGAIN. NO WATER ISSUES AT ALL THOUGH.
Terri, good luck with your flooring project. You will love it when it's finished!
