I need to cut the carpet in front of my door and put tile in there.
Pull up the existing carpet and pad. Clean the floor and make sure you have removed all the staples. Put down cement board (we use screws to hold in place). Then lay the tile using a mastik to glue it down. Once dry, grout. After the grout is dry, seal.
My tile man recommends to mastic down the 1/2" cement board and screw down, then fill in seams and screw holes with mastic, keeping it flat. Much like you finish drywall. Stops water from getting under cement board and damaging the plywood below. Obviously more important near wet areas.
Keisha,
Adding the cement board and tile will raise your overall floor height and it might now be higher than it was with the carpet. You will have to add some molding around your baseboards to cover the flooring edge and expansion joints. You may also need transition strips between your new floor and adjacent rooms or you may need to cut a door down if it will no longer open and close due to the floor height.
