1st step is figure out what you want in the backyard...ground cover, grass trees etc....also think where you may want a sitting area, eating area dining area.... we completely redid our backyard gutting the old deck that was more an accident waiting to happen....we opted instead for everything in the backyard to be ground level with a set of stairs to get into the door....we already had a section where our pond was and where are chickens were at so that had to stay but would also be updated....start with what would be the largest..IE: overhangs,sheds...we were actually building a manzone bar complete with electricity from the ground up..but one thing I wanted to make sure happened is it kept with the design of the backyard so it works with everything else and not stand out....plants need to have proper growth room and take into account sunshine too...some plants prefer east direction while some need protection from north etc.......I also started with a plan I had in my head and putting that on paper...
