How do I redo a bark weave bottom chair?
I was told this was bark. I think it is part of the tree under the bark. It is weaved tho. It has several breaks in it, although it doesn't look like it in the picture.

Beautiful and unique chair! You are going to have to replace the entire seat, so when you get started, remember how it was attached! (photos are always good!) What you will need is some nice flat basket weave material (bark or reed is your choice). You'll need to search for exactly what you want (internet is the best place to start) and you may need to stain it to match your chair. Make sure you note the pattern of this weave which looks like 2 over and 2 under, but you may want to change that up once you start looking at patterns. Whether you stain or not, remember to wear gloves to do this. It will be rough on your hands, even though you are going to be working with wet material. And remember, once it is fastened back to the seat, it will shrink and tighten as it dries. Don't forget to have fun!
Instead of replacing the thin wood, why not try using Shaker tape? Much easier to work with and comes in a large variety of colors. Do a search for the tape and how-to's. It is very easy to work with compared to the brittle wood.
Flat reed weaving is very easy , as shown on this site. http://www.basketmakerscatalog.com/mfiles/splintchairseat.php
