What's the best flower/plant to grow in Texas?

Tomato plants need to have suckers removed. These are the leaves/branches that point down and don't have any flowers on them. I believe their intent is to support the plant, but most people use cages for support. Removing suckers will send more food into the fruit and also allow more air and light to get in.
