We took ours right out of the wall, painted the opening and put shelves in. The things that were stored in the old cabinet went into a box under the sink
I updated a set of brass living room glass-top tables by spray painting them black. You could do the same thing with your cabinet. Remove bulbs, mask off everything you don't want painted, and do your painting.
If you want to keep the chrome side lights, tape them off and paint the rest. Use the paint that is appropriate for what the medicine cabinet is made of. If you want to paint the chrome, use a paint for metal.
If you like the chrome sidelights, I used WD-40 and wads of aluminum foil to “scrub” off the rust pits on the chrome.
If you're keeping chrome in your bath, keep it waxed, to reduce potential for pitting. Ideally, it should be wiped dry after showering, even with the use of an exhaust fan.
If the lights can be switched to LED, it will improve bulb longevity while reducing energy consumption.
