How do I remove rust from the lid of a recently acquired chest freeze?
I was just given a working freezer chest, the problem is the rust on the outside of the lid, I'd like to know how can I remove the rust so I can repaint it?

Sure, soak it with WD40 then go over it with steel wool. Clean with TSP and dry quickly. Prime with oil based primer or spray paint primer then spray paint it or use oil based paint.
Sand as much of the rust off till the surface is smooth. Then use a rust reformer. Converts rust to a polymer coating that can easily be painted. Then use Rustoleum 2X spray paint.

I would wipe it down, use fine steel wool or a wire brush to remove the rust. Then use a primer and rust inhibitor like Rustoleum makes.
