How can you add color to white ceramic tile on a kitchen floor?
We have bright white 12 in square tile in a home we bought. It would not be my choice as I have 4 dogs and we are in and out all the time. I need to add color to it to somehow conceal the tracks and everyday dirt. It is driving me crazy and never every looks good. I can't afford to replace all the tile just need to add color and protect the added color from the human and dog traffic ?

Hi Kim, here are some tutorials to give you some ideas on how to paint tile and protect it. In an area that gets alot of traffic, adding a pattern helps to conceal the dirt even more. If you didn't want the white background because of dirt, you could make it gray.

How to Paint Tile Floors With a Stencil
Just remember you are painting over a glazed product. I'd test it in one small area to see if it will hold up to your traffic. Paint doest stick well to ceramic and scratches easy. I hope it works out for you.
Lots of pets in my household too. Unfortunately there is not much you can do. Tile is tile. You can try and paint it or gel stain it, then seal it. Eventually it will peel, but might buy you enough time until you can save up for new flooring. I mop and dry my kitchen floor every night before bed. With 6 cats, 3 dogs, 3 neighbor dogs, visiting pets and a canary and dragon, my kitchen floor sees a lot of action. For now just mop or swiffer every night and call it a day until you can decide what to do next. One of my friends has 6 dogs from tiny to jumbo. She has a very beautiful, large, expensive home in a very desirable neighborhood. She ripped out everything that wasn't tile or hardwood and installed sheet vinyl. She is as happy as a clam! So easy to clean and it takes a beating. Something to consider.
I have a mat outside and a rag rug inside the doorway. It helps somewhat. You could also get a long runner rug to put where the traffic is the heaviest or where the dirt shows the most.
A moisture and dirt trapper mat made especially for pets may help if placed at the outer door the dogs use. I honestly do not think painting will hold up to the dogs' nails.
