Marilyn that’s a tough one. Sanding may help butnif it’s sanded too much you have a problem. Usually replacing the boards is the only option. We have the same issue. Ugh.

You might need an enzyme cleaner to get rid of that smell. First I'd try hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Sprinkle the baking soda on the wood and let it sit as long as you can. Follow that by spraying on hydrogen peroxide. You might want to try the hydrogen peroxide in a hidden spot because it can act like a bleach. It's best to check first so you know if it will lift the color. If not, it's safe to use. If that doesn't work, I've heard good things about an enzyme product called Nature's Miracle which is available in pet stores. Another product that has been said to really work is SCOE 10X. That one is only available online. Wishing you the best.
