How do I stop groundhogs from eating my plants?

We used a "have a heart" cage to catch several groundhogs that were living under our house when we purchased it. We released them in the woods far from our home.

Groundhogs are awful! I think the only good way to keep them out is high fencing.

P.S. Our town supplies cages to catch and relocate critters like groundhogs. Perhaps your does, too.

They'll keep coming as long as there is food, warmth in the winter, and coolness in the summer. They were doing expensive damage to the trailer wiring, insulation and wood to the bottom of my mobile home. Didn't have the option to be a nice guy. Either contact a home improvement store, or an exterminator if you aren't faint of heart (like i am) about getting too close to wild animals. Warning: the exterminator wanted $35/animal to relocate. And THAT price was cheap.

What about a dog. dogs will mess up the lawn for a while until they catch/run them away, but then you restore lawn only one time. Or use predator urine capsules tossed into their burrows. the scent will drive them away.

A friend of mine had this problem yrs ago in their neighborhood. Dogs did not do the trick, trapping did nothing! They came back and they breed like rats, lots of them!!

The farmers wanted them GONE because they dug very large holes and highways underground and when their farm equipment came to harvest, their tires would get caught in those holes and they would be jacked up! Then they would have to go get more equipment and waste a productive day, wrenching out their tractor.

The last resort was to shoot them and keep on it. That got rid of the problem.

Yes, shooting is most effective, but not always permissable. Try dousing your entire lawn and garden (not edibles) with agricultural grade castor bean oil. Come Spring, plant multiple castor bean plants.

Get an exterminator to trap and relocate them, or you can rent a humane trap from most exterminators and find a great place with good food sources and water and let them go there. They should let you know what to use to lure them into the trap.

Hi Liz, you will need to trap the groundhogs and move them to a different area. They build many, many tunnels under the ground and they can be difficult to trap because they probably have more than one entry point into their tunnels. They do like to have entry holes under sheds so it makes it more difficult to try and catch them. You might have to build a little fence around the trap(s) so they are more convinced to go into the trap to eat the bait. They can get very nasty if they have to defend themselves. I would not want my dog chasing or trying to get a groundhog.
