Do I have to sand and use a de-glosser when using chalk paint?
I want to paint a dresser. If I use chalk paint, I won't have to sand it or use a deglosser?

Hi Jan, after a couple of bad experiences with old finishes bleeding through my paint I now always strip the piece first. I have heard though that I really good stain blocking primer will work too but they are pricey.
Jan, here's a lady who says you don't have to prep.

That is correct, just wipe it clean is all. After you chalk paint it will need a type of urethane to keep it from being chipped/damaged though. Some people polyurethane and others prefer a different type urethane. Check to see which is best for your preference. Have fun!
Wrong--The shinier the finish the more prep no matter what you are doing to it. http://www.vintagebarnboutique.com/2015/05/chalk-based-paint-myths-learn-how-to-paint-furniture/ Ways to make chalk paint https://salvagedinspirations.com/best-homemade-chalk-paint-recipes/ 7 ways to seal chalk paint https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnMTAh2c0e0
If the dresser has any kind of glossy finish on it you can sand it lightly with fine sandpaper, clean it well, and then use chalk paint. It is minimal prep--you just want to take the shine off the old finish so it looks dull--you don't need to sand down to the wood or remove any of the old finish. You will need at least 2 coats of chalk paint--in some situations I have done 3 coats. You can finish the dresser with a wax finish--usually sold with the chalk paint brand you purchase or you can use a clear poly finish.
