I just came from Muir Woods, and wrote this post about it. Go to their website I linked at the bottom of my post and see, I bet they have growing information for redwoods on there, they sell the baby trees.
Call your local County Extension Service if you are in the U.S. They have a surprising amount of knowledge. Also the U.S. Fish and Wildlife department should be able to help you.

Where in the tropics? Doubtful they will grow as it is not the right climate, but you can certainly try.
