Hi June, the thing with formica is that its very smooth, making it hard to get anything to stick to it. Have you tried sanding it down some first?
Lightly sanding with 200 grit sandpaper to remove shine and roughen for paint. Prime with Kilz primer then paint.

If that isn't your style, then you have to aggressively sand and prime before paint.
