Your best bet for planting is to make sure the soil is warm enough, I wait until the soil is about fifty degrees unless it is a cool weather plant. I use garden soil or potting soil enriched with some added peat moss, and some sterilized manure (it doesn't smell). Till in to get it down into the existing soil so the new roots have the good soil to grow in. Make sure the danger of frost or freeze is past unless you want to cover everything if the temp drops. You can amend your soil any time that it is workable.
start now throwing smashed egg shells(not washed) coffee grounds(used) ground up shrimp shells, ground up green veggies & even some ground up dried leaves into soil,chicken/cow/horse/goat/rabbit poop great stuff to add. Ground up meaning in blender, food processor with water make slurry. The smaller the better or you'll need to make it into compost & that will take awhile. mix with water and mix down 6-8"s into soil while it's still wet and snowy.Get earth worms for your soil. here's INFO on sandy soil in Woodward OK https://www.woodwardnews.net/news/composting-creates-healthy-soil/article_2001472b-5f64-5cfd-8c3a-4c34c2a34233.html Is it the dirt the red stuff(high iron) If you want to add fertilizers most OK soil is high in PH so you'll need high sulphur fertilizer.
