Hi Jill, I'd start with power washing it and replacing any boards that are rotted. Then put a good water sealer on it to help protect it. Hope this helps!
Hello Jill,
Our deck was old too and we had a roof put on to keep the most of the leaves off and to make it more usable, and it keeps the furniture out of the weather. Then we had a company come out and pressure wash and seal it. We added some plants, a colorful indoor/outdoor rug and painted our old black metal furniture bright colors. I bought the cushions on mark down at WalMart at the end of the season..$5 each! I store them in those large utility bags you can buy and take them in and out as needed...I don't leave them in the weather.
Then for some privacy and bring the spindles up to 4" apart code, we put horizontal cedar fencing boards someone gave my son over the spindles.
The covering was expensive, as was the sealing, since we are elderly and can no longer do that kind of work, but the decorating was under $300.
The second photo was taken on a cloudy day so it looks dull!
You can also do what is called a "whitewash" on the floor using different colors. That is where you use half water/half paint, put it on and then wipe most of it off. That way it stains the floor but does not chip off. You could tape off a pattern of squares and make it beautiful!
We want to see before and after photos!
