Hi my husband tried a shovel but the roots are so deep could not get out. . He tied a rope to riding mower and then to plant. .he had to pull it out. .they have some deep roots. . Pulled up to woods and left it. .it is still in woods five years later. .has not died. Yet. .Good luck .
Cut off the plant with a chain saw at the ground.
Wear gloves and take a small artist’s brush and hand paint the exposed trunk with two drops of weed and brush killer, 24 hours before any rain.
The tap root will die in the ground and then you can go back and clean up the rest of what’s there in a month.
Good luck. We had that problem at our previous yard. We cut them down to the ground, drilled holes into the tuber, and poured in lots of weed and grass killer. After a while you can dig out the tubers.
