Keep coated with a little Wd40
Keep them clean and spray with WD 40.

You know those little "silica" bags that come in new shoe boxes, home decor packages, and other boxed items? They're to keep things fresh but you can place them in your toolboxes (like I do) and they help keep away rust. So don't toss them! Just drop them wherever you keep your tools.
I spray mine with WD40 and wipe then down. Leaves a water repellent coating.
My grandfather used paste wax on his tools.
If you put your tools in a bucket of sand, they will never rust. This is how I keep all my garden tools, big and small, clean. And they will never rust.
