This really depends on the plant and where you live. Could you send more information please?
It depends on the plant, but you usually don't want them to become bone dry. If you can feel moisture in the top inch or so of soil, then you can probably wait to water. If the soil is dry when you feel down into the soil, then go ahead and water.
