Renee, I would never recommend it take the few extra hours to do it right and remove the old tile. Your results will be better
I agree, I would remove the current tile and start fresh. If you tile over, you are at risk of unevenness, etc plus your tile will stick over farther now than the previous tile and if you have counters, etc you will have an overhang in the new tile from the counter
Yes, it is well worth taking the time to remove the old tile first. Otherwise, you'll never get the new tile quite "right."
