Hello Janie, I live in Ohio and I start mine around April 1st. I usually plant around May 15th so that gives them a month and a half.
Some seeds should be sown directly in garden and some seeds need to start indoors. You need to know when the last frost is in your area and go from there. The internet has all the info, no need to purchase special books. Look up vegetable gardening in East Tennessee, the University of Tennessee has great info.
