How to get ground hogs out of the crawl space?
The crawl space is only about 10 inches high, ventilation hole has no cover.

Put a bunch of vegetable scrapings, left over veggies and greens a little ways away from the crawl space. When you see them eating, put something sturdy up to block the hole for a few minutes. Grab a flashlight and check to make sure the occupants are all out. Put a sturdy wire cover over the hole so that you can still get circulation into the crawl space, but not let the ground hogs back into the crawl space. I had a low chicken wire fence around a veggie garden once and they just crawled right over it to get at the luscious things inside. A neighbor saw them and put out their scraps in a vacant lot next to our house everyday and they stayed out of my garden and never came back, even when they stopped putting it out. Needless to say, they got all the veggies they wanted out of the garden!
I've had good luck getting skunks to leave by placing a trouble light in the crawl space. They don't like 24 hours of bright light. I've never dealt with ground hogs but it might work.
Try throwing in some mothballs or rags saturated with household ammonia. If the ventilation hole is large then place some lattice over it or else use a screen for smaller hole
I solved this problem with Cyan pepper. I got a large container of the hottest pepper I could find and used a leaf blower to blow it into the crawl space. I never saw the ground hogs again.
LIVE traps. Catch & release over 1 mile away & they won't come back. Then, board up the entrance. Also, they've come inside for a reason. Find that reason & eliminate it so you won't attract others. Good Luck
