I like to use the ant traps that you can find at any hardware store or somewhere like Walmart. They do contain ant poison, so you need to keep them away from your kitchen and make sure your pets or children can't get at them, but they're very effective and safe enough if you take those precautions.

Half borax, half sugar, mix well. I do a bigger batch and use a funnel to get it as close to my house foundation as I can. No ants in the house for the last 4 years.

Agricultural grade diatomacious earth sprinkled where ants travel will kill them, but must be re-applied after rains. Use distilled white vinegar on walls, laminate countertops or tile floors to negate their scent trails.
